Ramsay Garden (or Ramsay Gardens) is a block of sixteen private apartment buildings in the Castlehill area of Edinburgh, Scotland; strikingly noticeable for their red ashlar (prepared stonework) and white harled exteriors.
Harling, a Scottish term, describes an exterior surfacing technique which produces a weatherproof-shield for a stone building. When embedded with pigment, it also obviates the need for repainting. Stonework is covered with a plaster of small pebbles or finely chipped stone; painted, cured, and topped off with a base of lime upon which additional pebbles are tossed. Rather impressive and beautiful for something so practical. (image anti-t-kom flickr)
